Resolved Question: Did I do the wrong thing asking for a transfer so soon?

I was going to wait but I just came out with it because I don't like to be thought of as stupid. I have been working here for almost 3 months and its a part-time job. I did a silly thing and applied for another job within the same organisation too soon and I am SURE my manager found out. Maybe she was asked about my performance but I never put her down as my reference. I found out when I went to work this morning and the manager says to everyone "there is a vacancy in the booking office and we can apply for it". Well how did she know about this vacancy? And then my nurse collegue was sitting there on a website pretending to look for jobs (consultant jobs, I know she has no intention of being a consultant). My manager saw this and acted surprised saying she will support her to move up the career ladder blah blah blah. I sensed it was all staged. When I asked my collegue whether the boss knows I applied for it, she came across as if she didn't know. She asked me how I knew and I said I just know. She started laughing with another collegue. Don't get me wrong I like these collegues but I'm not stupid... I am the youngest one there and very quite so I feel like I never get taken seriously... I just went and told the manager I did apply to it but I did it because I wanted a transfer to my local office and knew it would take months before it could be organised... And I told her I didn't want to ask thinking it was too soon... She said she will help me out as two vacancies are about to become available so I'm happy but now wondering if I did the wrong thing to confront it even though I did it indirectly....  more

Voting Question: I want a animal based career but feel like I am stuck.... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!?

Hello there, i'm a 18 year old woman who desperately wants a career in animals. But I feel like i've hit a dead end. I would love a zoo job or a general animal welfare job or animal nursing job... really anything to do with animals. But I have a big problem, as much as I dream of a job at a zoo working with or alongside people that work with animals I don't think i'm ever going to be able to achieve that dream as, I left school when I was young, around 14 so did not take my GCSE's at all, and only have had one job since then which is hairdressing. I have NO formal qualifications and no experience working with animals, i've only ever owned rodents and fish due to living situations. I KNOW I have the ability to do well in a career like this & would be so dedicated to it, but its so upsetting to think that i'll never be able to get into it. I've looked for animal care courses and they all require a minimum of GCSE grades and are not local to me so I would not be able to afford re-locating for a course which I would not get paid for doing, but its not as if I would get accepted for the course anyway! It feels like i've hit a major dead end. Any advice on what I could do would be brilliant as there are no vacancies near me for any kind of animal welfare ect jobs, should I just keep looking & trying to apply for jobs which I don't have the qualifications for? Or should I go along a more realistic route and forget this dream? Thank you very much! Amber I would like to point out from this rude comment of "Ability doesn't mean squat. You need a degree in Zoology to pick up money poop. As long as you think your education isn't important, you will never achieve your dreams. Get back in school and go to college." I think education is VERY imporant... but with a very ill mother at the time I could not afford to go on with my education & am still in a very tight situation money wise so this has nothing to do with how I APPARENTLY think that education isn't important.  more

Resolved Question: Question for anyone from the UK now working in Gibraltar?

From June 2009 I may be moving from the UK to Gibraltar as that is where my boyfriend's job will be based from then. Have you or anyone you know moved to Gibraltar first and then found work once they are there? How easy will it be for me to find a job once I'm there? I can see that there are plenty of vacancies advertised but I wondered if my skills and experience would be what someone is looking for or is there a lot of competition? I am 26 and I have around 5 years+ experience in Admin/Secretarial roles which includes 18 months in the Betting/Gaming Industry. I am also a part qualified Veterinary Nurse and have small animal and exotics experience. I have 7 GCSEs inc English, Maths and Science. I don't have A Levels or a Degree as I have mostly worked since leaving school. I am mostly looking for some reassurance about my chances of finding employment once I'm settled in there. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.  more

Resolved Question: Has anyone ever worked as a Prison Nurse before?

For those of you that have read some of my other questions, I'm really confused as to where my Nursing career is heading. I work in CCU and I am doing the Msc in Cardiology- which I am part way through...However,I think I've made the wrong choice. I am one of these people that needs a challenge, and I need to be kept motivated. I filled out the application form for UCAS to apply to study Medicine, but now I don't think I want to do that either. I HATE not knowing what to do. I'm quite a 'together' person and usually know what I want. Chris is being irritating at the moment too, he said (and I quote) "If you go to Med School we won't be able to have children till we are old, also my sperm will run out" OK, he knows that will not happen, he's highly intelligent and is just saying that to be awkward/stupid/obnoxious. OK so yes, there is job vacancy at a Prison not to far from me, has anyone worked as a prison Nurse before? I can't for one moment think my dad or Chris would approve, but since when did I ever listen to anything anyone says? I've had Army Nursing experience, so I can be tough, but when I suggest this to my friends etc they tend to laugh and say it would not be a good idea me working in a prison, why exactly? What exactally is involved? The other option is re -training and becoming a Midwife? I kinda like that too. But I like medicine too, and I know I am capable of that. It would be a shame to put my academic abilities to waste. I just, don't want to be 40 in 20 years time and look back and think, "I wish I had done this, I wish I done that" I'd like to hear from anyone who has done either of the three I suggested above. With regards to midwifery, is the course 18 months long to convert if your a general Nurse? My dad says I should forget Nursing all together and become a drug rep, I would not like that! I get pissed off with drug company's as it is! But do you think I've left med school to late? I'm almost 23 now, I won't be going (if I go) till next September by which time I will almost be 24, then it's a 5 year medical degree (although I can do the shortened 4 year medical degree.. because of my existing degree) So I'd almost be 30 by the time I have done my 2 years pre reg. Oh dear god, I can't believe I am going to be 30 in 7 years time, you have no idea how much that freaks me out. I'm ranting again, I don't know why I do that, so basically any advise is appreciated, also, if there are any other specialty Nurses, it might be good to hear from you too Rhianna Good point Redbird! Yes thank you for your input Sid, I thought I blocked you? Dr Frank is married, I read in one of his answers today, he mentioned his wife so he's already taken, such a pity though! I do however also like the idea of being a practice nurse, so good point. Thank you for your comments/compliments Rose C.  more

Resolved Question: Hi, i am 5 weeks pregnant and am wondering whether i should apply for a new job?

I am a nurse and am currently working with an agency. The current workplace where i am doing a lot of shifts have a vacancy. but by the time the position starts i will only be there for 6 months before going on maternity leave. I have 2 jobs though and i know if i change my full time job i wont get maternity pay but i earn enough in my other job to be eligible for maternity pay. I don't know if i should go for the job. anf if i don't can you get maternity pay for 2 jobs? sorry if this doesn't make much sense. Basically do i get maternity pay for 2 jobs and do i apply for another job only to tell them before/after interview i am pregnant and wont be there long if i got the job? I feel it to be more difficult because i know them well and i know they would then have to pay to cover my maternity pay. and they have another staff member going on maternity leave in June. and they can relocate me to another workplace at their discretion on my return which i wouldn't want them to do. than  more

Resolved Question: Physiotherapy Assistant Job? UK ONLY PLEASE! Interview tips etc?

I've got an interview as a physiotherapy assistant next week, and just wanted some tips, please? I currently work as an auxiliary nurse within a neurosurgery department, and the physio vacancy is at the same hospital but within the trauma and orthopaedics directorate. Do you think my experience with neuro paients will be of any benefit? I think it should be somewhat, as we also treat patients for spinal and neck surgery. Does anyone work within physio on here? And could you please give me any tips on what sort of things I might be asked at interview? I have asked one of our senior neuro physios that work on my current ward, who said the most common questions would be things like 'What do I understand by physiotherapy?' 'What can I bring to the post?' etc... I know its cheatinga little bit, but can anyone please give me some tips etc? Obviously I know physiotherapy is primarily the rehabilitation of patients to promote maximum physical independance and ability! Thanks!!  more

I'm a new registered nurse(Philippines,Asia), and still in the Philippines.,where can i land a good nursing job in NZ w/o experience? I am a new (experience-less) nurse from the Philippines and I would like to gain my clinical experience in NZ/AU or UK. Do you know where i can go or somebody who can help me go and land a good job on those mentioned country? pls. help.i tried checking several sites and almost all of them are asking for 2 year experience, I am applying here just to gain experience but it seems like all hospitals had no vacancy as of the moment, I don't want to waste my time and the thing I learned, I want to expound it by getting more exp. and helping people.  more

Resolved Question: Why do US employers really require hospital experience from foreign nursing applicants?

What happens to us fresh graduate nurses who find it tough to apply in hospitals due to the increasing number of nurses and no vacancies esp. here in the Philippines? What happens even if we have the US exams but no experience? In every job, we all start as a rookie right? So why need experience, when US hospitals still train newly hired nurses, foreign or locals? I know they want to hire experienced nurses to give the best care service for their patients. But even a rookie can give the same or even better care service than the experienced. Experience should be a preference, not a requirement. Give opportunity to us inexperienced to prove we can provide care and services to US patients even without a hospital experience here in the Philippines.  more

Resolved Question: Does anyone care about what is happening to nurses in the NHS?

It is little reported but across the Uk Hospital budgets are struggling to pay nurses. there are no jobs for newly qualified nurses and many hospitals are talking about not filling vacancies or making redundancies because they, having finally introduced 'Agenda for Change' pay deal promised 4 years ago, cannot afford to pay the nurses they need.  more

Resolved Question: HELP! Degree in English, Minor in Photography, NO JOB! (Minnesota)?

I just graduated with my degree in English and minor in photography at a top-tier college in Minnesota. I'm having a hard time finding work that pays at least $10/hr with benefits, which seems reasonable to expect with a degree and student loans coming! Does anyone know of any good places to work with current vacancies that pay at least this for someone with my background? (Though it doesn't have to be related to English [writing, reading, secretarial, etc.] or photography, so long as I don't need a degree in something else, like nursing.) I am interested in the Duluth and as much as two hours South of Duluth area.  more
